DIVISION OF HUMANITIES

Shanebeck, Sturz, Wetzler ASSISTANT PROFESSORS: Doland, Gilman, Gooden, McDougall INSTRUCTOR: Ridderhof The Division of Humanities, in addition to majors in English, Spanish, and Speech, offers two divisional majors: the Humanities major and the Humanities major in Language Arts. 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division; an 18 unit concentration in one field (German, Greek, Spanish, Literature, or Philosophy), of which 12 must be upper division; and 6 upper division units in each of two remaini ng fi elds ( French, German, Greek, Spanish, Literature, Philosophy, or Speech). The course requirements for a concentration in Philosophy are the same as the courses li sted for the minor. Speech courses which satisfy this requirement are 403 and 404. Humani ti es Major: Humanities Major in Language Arts: 30 units, of which 24 must be upper divis ion; an 18 unit concentration in one fi eld (English or Speech), of which 12 must be upper division; and 6 upper division units in each of two remammg fields (English, Linguistics, or Speech ) . Course requirements in the concentra­ tion are the same as the courses listed for the minor. ENGLISH Ob j ectives. The Department of English has five objectives: the understanding of language as a means of communication; the ability to speak and write with clarity of thought and mechanical correctness; an understanding of literature as a record of the development of human thought and the r eflection of human his­ tory; the appreciation and enjoyment of good literature; and an acquaintance with the literary heritage of the English-speaking world.

History 207 or 208 is recommended for a ll English majors .

Department Maj01·: 30 units , of which 24 must be upper division. English 201 ~nd 202 are r equired for the major and are prerequisite to upper division courses In the major. The student must also complete English 315 and 415 and select 3 units from each of the following four groups: (1) 304, 307, 410; (2) 312, 317, 413, 416; (3) 320, 322, 407; (4) 309, 310, 408; and 6 units from (5) 203, 204, 316, 401, 403, 406, but not more than one writing course. The r emaining 3 units may be selected from any of the above groups except that the student must not select both 312 and 413.
