Pre­ requisite: 105, 106 or consent of instructor. 301, 302 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (5, 5) Important groups of carbon compounds, including the aliphatic and aromatic series of organic compounds. Typical reaction and methods of preparation of important organic compounds; fundamental theories of organic chemistry. Three hour s lecture, six hours laboratory. Prerequisite: 105, 106. 420 BIOCHEMISTRY (5) Fundamental concepts of biochemistry including chemistry of proteins, amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acid and nucleotides, enzymes, metabolism, and energy transfer process. Three hour s lecture, six hours laboratory. Prerequisite : 105, 106, 301. This department endeavors to accomplish a two-fold objective : (1) to acquaint the general liberal arts student with the structure, logic, and applications of mathematics in the social and physical sciences; (2) to provide an adequate background in mathematics to equip students pursuing courses of study in elementary or secondary education, business, psychology, science, or pure and applied mathematics. The Department of Mathematics offers a major in mathe­ matics designed for those planning a future in applied mathematics, or for prospective secondary teachers .
