DIVISION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

The object ives of the Social Science Division are three-fold: to acquaint the student with the enormous body of facts related to the various subj ects within the division; to aid the student in the interpretation of these facts; and to help the student to use the knowledge gained in adjusting to the problems of life and in becoming a more effective and useful student. The Social Science Division offers five majors , three of them departmental, in­ cluding Business Administra tion , Business Education , History; and two division majors, including Latin American Studies and Social Science. 30 units beyond general educa­ tion requirements, of which 15 shall be in Latin American History; 9 shall be in Latin American subjects from the Departments of Anthropo logy, Geography, or Political Science; and 6 units shall be in Spanish langua ge or literature above t he general education requiremen t. Latin American Studi es major requirements: Social Science major requirements: 30 units beyond gener al education, of which 24 must be upper division; 18 in history or sociology; 6 in political science (301, 302) ; and 6 upper division in one other fi eld within the Division. It is recommended that those seeking a teaching credential will fulfill the require­ ments in hi stor y from the following courses: History 306, 309, 310, 320, 403 , 404. It is recommended that those planning a missionary career follow the require­ ments listed under the Missions Department. ANTHROPOLOGY 301 GENERAL CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3) An introduction to mankind's culture or whole way of living. Emphasis on t he nature of culture; cu ltural growth in history; the range of cu ltura l phenomena, including materia l culture, social organization, religion, language, and other related topics. - An introduction to human development from earliest times. Orig in and antiquity of man; criteria of race and racial cla ssification; current racial theories and race prob- lems. 302 GENERAL PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3) 303 ETHNOLOGY (3) Survey of principal culture types and their distribution; discu ssion of ethnological problems and the techniques of analyzing a culture.
