Department of Biological Science

Professor: Stephens Assistant Professors: Eddington, Kuld Instructor: Payne (chairman)

Objectives: The aims of the Biological Science curriculum are ( 1) acquainting all students with the reasoning processes of the scientific method as applied in biology , with the ex isting principles of biology as they apply to our age of technology, and with the dynamic state of advance in knowledge in biology ; (2) supporting the curriculum of majors in other departments (Nursing , Psychology , Physical Educati on, Education); (3) supplying a strong foundational core curriculum for the major in general Biological Science , and providing depth within a balanced selection of the major areas within biology.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE

The core curriculum in biology require s 32 units, including 111,312,322,401 (452), 470 and a minimum of six units of lower division electives and 26 upper division unit s. Thirty-two units of supporting science s are required, twenty in Chemistry (must include 301) and twelve in Mathematical and Physical Science (must include Mathematical Sciences I05).

BIOLOGICAL EDUCATION (SECONDARY) , REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE

Biology requirements are the same as stated above ; 20 units of supporting physical science including Chemistry 301 and Mathematical Sciences 105; 9 units of professional education courses.

BIOLOGICAL EDUCATION (ELEMENTARY) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE

Biology requirements same as stated above; 18 units of supporting physical science in cluding Chemistry 301; 14 uni ts of professional education courses.

Department Minor: 20 units, 14 of which must be upper division. The core curriculum is recommended unless specific needs dictate otherwi se. Specific minor requirements are to be approved by a departmental advisor. The general education requirement for a foreign language for those following a biology major may be met by two years of high school language or the first four units of a college language . These language units do not apply toward the required 138 units for graduation. Curriculum charts expressing specific major and college course requirements, and sample schedules for each of the above -mentioned major programs, may be obtained in the departmental office , Science Hall - room 200. All laboratory courses in biological science have a $15 laboratory fee.
