A non-professional degree (Bachelor of Arts) with a major in music is offered as well as a non-professional music minor. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree are exempt from the .iU! □ ecal eewsatioR re.... guirement in foreign langyage, literature, and need take only five units in mathematics -.l!!'l dfo r science. - - All Bachelor of Music candidates must complete a basic course of 51 units of music which consists of the following: Music l00 , 103,104 , 201 , 202,203,204,22 1,301,302,305 , 306, 3 I 3, 40 I , 402, applied music (principal instrument) 8 uni ts , applied music (second ary instrument) 4 units and ensemble 8 units. The remaining units in music are to be taken by advisement with the following stipula tions understood: I. Students with emphasis in applied music must take a minimum of 21 units in their principal instrument as well as appropriate literature and pedagogy. 2. Students with emphasis in composition must take 311, 312, 403, 411, and 412. 3. Students with emphasis in music education should take music education workshops as well as appropriate level music education courses . The total music units required in the Bachelor of Music program is as follows: Applied Music 76 Composition 76 Music Education Elementary 61 Secondary 67 Bachelor of Arts candidates must complete 55 units in music including 100, 103, l04 , 201,202,203,204,301, 302 , 305 , 306,401,402 ; Applied Music, 8 units; Ensemble, 6 units. Designed for entering music students with minimal or average background in music theory. Emphasis on recognition, dictation and singing of major/ minor scales, intervals and triads with collateral exercises in notation. Additional exercises in simple/compound meters and standard rhythmic concepts. Three hours each week. 104 MUSIC THEORY-AURAL EMPHASIS (2) Recognition, dictation, and singing of melodies in major and minor keys. Individual in struction in preparation for written theory entrance examination. Three hours each week . Prerequisite: 103. 201 MUSIC THEORY-WRITTEN EMPHASIS (2) Diatonic harmony , melodic construction non-chord tones, harmonization of melodies , four-part writing. Three hours each week. Entrance examination required to determine ability to analyze and notate all major and minor scales (to 7 sharps and 7 flats) , all inter vallic combinations and all diatonic triads and inversions; interpretation and construction of simple and compound meters. For comprehensive preparation, study: Harder, Paul , Basic Materials in Music Theory, 2nd edition, Allyn and Bacon, Boston, 1970 . Examina tion given in May and September. 202 MUSIC THEORY-WRITTEN EMPHASIS (2) Seventh and ninth chords, modulation, secondary dominant chords. Three hours each week. Prerequisite: 201.
