Hebrew Standardized Assessment Exams In the spring of 2020, our 8 th Grade students for the first time took the Hebrew Proficiency Test, which allows those who pass to earn two foreign language credits with the Texas ISD network of high schools, and 80% of our 8 th Grade students met or exceeded the score necessary to earn credit. This was a first-ever testing that Levine undertook in Hebrew language, which gave Levine a strong indicator of our program’s quality and depth. The school intends to continue with these tests going forward. Hebrew Strengths and Accomplishments • We have a structured, sequential and interactive K8 Hebrew Curriculum, allowing for student engagement, effective use of technology, and a program addressing both traditional Jewish literature and modern living language learning. • At each level of Hebrew, instruction is mindful of all facets of communication: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. • Learning outcomes are evident: students are able to lead services with their full knowledge of tefillah (prayers); and they are creating an inspirational connection to Israel by way of cultural studies and learning contemporary Israel music. • Students are able to have real life connection through Hebrew by way of their pen- pal project with Israeli students from the “Amirim School.” • Students are highly spirited about Hebrew learning because of such events as the Hebrew Spelling Bee Competition, which is an occasion for all students to cheer on their classmates. • Students are able to experience Israel, and immerse themselves further in language acquisition, by way of participating in the school-wide programs of Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron, Yom Ha’ Atzmaut, Zimriyah, and by way of participating in the 8 th Grade Israel Mission for three weeks in Israel. • Younger Hebrew students are able to create community, and class bonding through three “Chagigot” experiences and programs, plus two time -honored traditions each year at Levine: Chagigat HaChumash, Chagigat HaSiddur, Chagigat HaSafah, Aliyah, and Kehilla Kedosha. • The school’s initial effort at having all 8 th grade students take the Hebrew Proficiency Test was a big success, with 80% of our students achieving or exceeding the equivalency of two high school years of language credit in the Dallas ISD program. Challenges • More opportunities for students to continue practicing Hebrew-reading fluency through 8 th Grade. • Some students do not achieve Hebrew speaking fluency after taking 8 years of Hebrew classes
