DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The major function of the Department of Education is the professional preparation of students to teach in schools of California at the Kindergarten-primary and ele mentary levels. An adequate preparation of the elementary school teacher should include: a satisfactory subject matter foundation; competency in the knowledge and use of skills of teaching; the development and encouragement of critical judgment and creativity; and the development of social and personal traits, ethical standards and Christian ideals of service. Applicants for credentials shall be screened prior to the junior year, or upon transfer from other schools or departments, and must have completed preliminary personality, speech, and physical examinations before being passed by the Education Qualifications Committee. Students qualifying, must complete one year of observa tion and participation in the public schools prior to their 10 units of student teaching. Students should plan their programs for one semester of five full days per week of student teaching.

Recommended minors are Psychology, History, English, Science, Art or Music. Two minors of 12 units are required. Candidates for the Kindergarten-Primary Credential must take Ed. 317. 301. PRINCIPLES OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION. (2) A general course covering the background and qualifications of a teacher, rural and urban classroom organization and management, curriculum, discipline, school organizations, district services, safety, in-service training, and teacher tenure. Pre requisite for all Educational Methods classes. 39
