DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATI:ILETICS Obiective. The objectives of the Physical Education program are: to teach the necessity for, and the techniques of, physical fitness; to provide wholesome recreational activities and intramural sports; to conduct intercollegiate athletics; and to teach academic classes that will aid in the planning and conducting of physical and recre­ ational activities in churches and schools. Each student is required to earn four units of activity credit toward graduation. No course may be repeated for credit in meeting this requirement. Two different varsity sports may be substituted for activity classes, after a student has earned two credits. A student my elect an additional four units of activity credit toward graduation. Courses may be repeated. Each student is required to complete a semester course in personal hygiene. 101. TRAINING AND CONDITIONING (Men). (1) Instruction in posture, balance and physical conditioning, with emphasis on development of muscular strength and endurance. Required of all new men failing to reach a prescribed minimum of physical fitness during the fall testing program. 102. BALANCE AND POSTURE (Women). (1) Instruction in basic movement and balance, with emphasis in improving posture and physical fitness. Required of all new women failing to meet prescribed standards of a fall screening test. 103. ARCHERY. (1) Development of skill in archery, with practice in both field and target shooting. 104. BADMINTON. (1) The etiquette, rules, background, and techniques; development of skill in playing badminton. 105. BASKETBALL. (1) Development and knowledge of skills, team play, strategy and rules. Basic officiating principles included. 106. BODY BU1LDING (Men). (1) Principles and practice of weight lifting in the improvement of physical develop­ ment. A study of the muscles used in lifting. 107. FIELD HOCKEY. (1) Fundamental techniques of individual and position play, team strategy, and rules of field hockey. 108. FLAG FOOTBALL. (1) Fundamental techniques of individual and position play, team strategy, and rules of flag football. 109. LIFESAVING AND WATER SAFETY. (1) Development of proficiency in lifesaving and artificial respiration techniques, and standards of organizing safe recreational and camp water programs. American National Red Cross certification upon successful completion. 110. SOCCER. (1) Fundamental techniques of individual and position play, team strategy, and rules of soccer. 56
