INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR IN COMMUNICATIONS STUDIES

The Interdisciplinary Major in Communications Studies seeks to provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of the process, nature, and effects of human communication. The student may select an emphasis in Mass Communications, Interpersonal Communications, or Inter-Cultural Communications which consists of 30 units beyond general education (24 of the units must be upper division and must include 331 and 435). The specialization in Mass Communications centers upon the dynamics of communications designed to influence human conduct in macrocosmic social contexts. The specialization in Interpersonal Communications centers upon small group, face to face communicative interaction ranging from dyadic to intercultural levels. The specialization in Inter-Cultural Communications centers on the dynamics of communications between people of different cultures or sub-cultures. Each student must take a 3 unit performance course in oral communications and a 3 unit performance course in written communications.
