alone a mattress or a pallet. When the healed man is seen carrying his pallet, it arouses the fury of the religious leaders. They do not deny that a miracle has been performed and a min istry of mercy done, but it con flicts with the traditions of the fathers. They begin to accuse the Master of breaking the Sab bath law. In the last part of John 5:17 (RSV) we observe how our Lord replies. “ M y Fa ther is working still and I am working.” And for this reason “ . . . the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:18, RSV). S ome th o u g h tfu l student may call attention to the fact that most of the refer ences just given are, from John’s gospel, written particular ly to present Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Perhaps these Scrip tures are an expression of the later faith of the church rather than Jesus’ own mind and mes sage. But we cannot separate these claims of Jesus from the gospel record. They are woven into its very fabric. They can not be deleted from the story without demolishing the struc ture. It is rather difficult to m anage an um b r e lla from which the spokes have been re moved. Just try it sometime and see what happens! But neither will the gospel hold together without the strong spokes of these claims of Christ to unique ness. If He did not make these claims, then we know nothing whatever about His life. A PITIFUL APPEAL FROM ISRAEL "As an old Hebrew Christian of 70 I write this letter hoping you might be able to help me and my brethren. I escaped from concentration camp where my wife and children died in the gas chambers. For five years I have been living in Israel. I am old and 90 percent blind, so I cannot work and am in great distress and hope you can help us. The country is poor and there are many poor people here.”

W e receive many such pitiful appeals from poverty-stricken Hebrew Christians in the Holy Land and from Hebrew Christian survivors of persecution scattered all over Europe. W e plead with Christian friends to undergird with prayer and gifts our faithful ministry of relief and witness amongst Christ’s destitute brethren. Help us to relieve the pangs of hunger and support the helpless Hebrew Christians in our Homes for little children and the aged. Send your gift to: THE INTERNATIONAL HEBREW CHRISTIAN ALLIANCE 5630 N.
