HOW CH R IST IA N IT Y WORKS ....... 11

Cotton-Picking Preacher

There are few better laboratories in which to test the workings of Christianity than the camps that house America’s migrant farm workers. To get this story I spent some time at the Redwood Camp near Bakers field, Calif. Wearing old clothes and beat-up army combat boots, I took my Rolleiflex camera and wandered among the shacks and shoulder- high rows of cotton. It was hot and the dust was thick and when I came away I had some genuine respect for Rev. and Mrs. Leon Day, who are full-time workers under the Mission to the Migrants. Brother and Sister Day (that’s the way the folks in the camp address them) come from Texas. And where local pastors and social workers have completely failed to meet the almost unbelievable needs of the migrants in this area, the Days have made dramatic progress by living and working with them as they preach the gospel.

(Above) an old man carries 100 lbs. of cotton to the pay station while (le ft) Migrant Missionary Leon Day picks cotton and. tells his fellow - workers about Christ Who said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
