Why are we concerned?
Suicide Re-entry Staff Training Module
Returning to school following a suicide related incident can be very challenging for students. In fact, the data indicates they are at far greater risk of another suicide attempt during the initial weeks following their return. School districts must be proactive in developing policies and procedures that ensure immediate targeted support for students and staff as they are re-entering the school community.

Checklist for Developing Re-entry Procedures: Steps to Support Students After Suicide Related Absences The checklist includes steps to take prior to a student returning to school and upon their return to ensure safeguards are in place. Steps include creating a re-entry safety plan, determining possible accommodations, providing documentation, and incorporating a follow-up process.
Preparing Staff to Support Students During Re-entry These resources provide information and tips to prepare school staff for supporting students are they re-enter the school community following a suicide related incident. The tips sheet that can be customized with the school’s resources and contact information. It includes reasons for concern, warning signs, and ways to offer support. The PowerPoint and short video cover the points from the tips sheet and are tools that can be shared with staff to help prepare them for supporting students as they re-enter school.

Re-entry Safety Plans Prior to students re-entering the school environment after a suicide related absence, a safety plan should be created collaboratively with school staff, key mental health professionals, parents, and the student. The two examples include: a safety plan that can be used by the team to develop a comprehensive assistance strategy a personal safety plan that provides the student with an opportunity to reflect about their needs and identity available resources they can tap into for assistance.

Handbook for Developing School Suicide Policies and Procedures The handbook include steps and resources for developing policies and procedures that should include intentional steps for re-entry support. It includes examples and templates to assist in the process. Resources for Parents
This electronic guide for parents (available in English and Spanish) helps answer tough questions and offers state and national support resources. It is an excellent resource to provide for parents while safety planning for successful re-entry. Schools will often include a link to these resources on their school websites and print the business card size flyers for parents and staff.
