STUDENT MAINTENANCE Each resident student is required to spend one hour every week, including all vacation periods except Christmas, in assigned work that contributes to keeping the building clean. Non-resident students who wish exemption from this requirement must pay a Non-Residence Maintenance Fee.
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE The Medical Department conducts student health services for the benefit of all registered students who have an approved physical examination prior to admission to school in the fall and spring semesters. It is staffed by a Medical Director and qualified registered nurses. For serious emergencies a competent staff of medical doctors and dentists is on call and available for the care of students for a nominal fee. The health service includes a Dispensary for consultation with a nurse and treatment of minor injuries as well as follow-up care in the more serious needs. It is open daily to students while school is in session. A nurse is on call at all hours of the day and night, for any serious emergency. Included also is a school infirmary, a ten-bed hospital, with a diet kitchen, treatment room, and laboratory. This service is operated for the benefit of the students with the cooperation of the doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians in the School of Missionary Medicine. Hospitalization in any approved hospital is provided for students who need emergency surgery or medical care that cannot be given in the school's infirmary. This is done in conference with the doctors and upon the authorization of the Medical Director. Authorized hospitalization permits the student financial assistance by the Bible College to cover board and room while in the Hospital, up to $80.00. This may also cover the doctor's fee and certain other surgical expense. It does not cover the expense of operating room, ambulance, special nurse, or X-ray. Likewise, it is not authorized for maternity cases, chronic conditions, any accidents due to carelessness, or any condition already covered by other insurance. Medical examinations required for the issuance of General Elementary Creden tials by the State Department are given to all Seniors upon request by the Education Department. PRACTICAL CHRISTIAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT At the beginning of each semester, a full-time Director of the Christian Service Department interviews each student to ascertain the best practical outlet for, and application of, the truth taught in the classes. While at Biola, in order to prepare him better for work in the various areas of service in the church and community, a student is expected to have practical experience in many Christian activities: Sunday school, jail work, detention homes, hospitals, street meetings, churches, and other- avenues of service. At present stu dents serve in approximately 300 churches in Southern California. Each student is expected to devote a minimum of three hours a week in his assigned Christian service and receives one unit of non-academic credit each semester. 26
