Professor DONALD S. RoBERTSON (head); Instructors ROBERT E. KOFAHL, KERMIT RATZLAFF. Objective. The objective of this department is to provide a background for further work in science, psychology, and education, and to furnish the basis for intelligent reading in the field of general knowledge. In addition to demonstration-laboratory work, and the usual procedures indigenous to work in biology, unusual opportunities are afforded by the Southern California region in its varieties of museums, zoos, its proximity to the seashore and mountains, etc. The courses will make use of these various facilities through field trips. 101-102. PHYSICAL SCIENCE. (2-2) A survey course giving to the student an understanding of the physical sciences and a background for further study. 201-202. BIOLOGY. (4-4) A survey course dealing with the basic principles operating in living organisms, including a study of the various types of animals and plants according to the accepted standard classifications. Inclusion of biological problems that are particularly related to human society. 301. PHYSIOLOGY AND ANATOMY. (3) An introduction to the basic facts of structure and function of the human body. Prerequisite: 201 and 202 or their equivalent. 302. GENETICS. (3) Introduction to the laws of heredity. A consideration of the operation of these laws in plant and animal as well as man. Prerequisite: 201 and 202 or its equivalent. 401. THE ORIGIN OF THE ORGANIC WORLD. (2) A course designed to familiarize the student with current and past thinking on the origin of the organic world. Introduction to the recent discoveries and the current thought in this field leading to an intelligent evaluation of the available evidence. Prerequisite: Science 201 and 202 or their equivalent. 402. GENERAL NEUROLOGY. (3) An introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. Prerequisites: Science 201-202 and Psychology 205-206.
