In addition, each student, while participating in clinical courses, will be required to have malpractice in­ surance in force equivalent to coverage available through the college. Transpor­ tation is provided by the college for a nominal fee and is required of all stu­ dents, during the first two and a half years of clinical experience. In the senior year, it is required that students will have, or have access to, personal trans­ portation while assigned to hospitals or other health agencies. Clinical courses require four hours of lab per one unit of credit. Department Major: Biological Science 204, 221; Chemistry 103; Nursing 202, 204, 301, 302, 401, 402, 410, 420, and 430. Required supporting courses: Anthro­ pology 301 ; Psychology 309; and Sociology 301 and 313. The general education requirement for a foreign language for those following a nursing major may be met by two years of high school language or the first four units of a college language. Nursing majors are exempt from the general education requirements of three units of literature and six units of world civili­ zation. 202 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING I - LECTURE (3) Nursing as a health science in promoting physical and mental well-being. Principles underlying basic nursing skills, drug administration, and nutrition. 202 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING I- LABORATORY (3) Nursing care and the organizational structure of the hospital; opportunity to practice nursing skills in the nursing laboratory and in affiliated hospitals and medical cen­ ters. Twelve hours laboratory. Laboratory fee: $15.00 . 204 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS IN NURSING (3) Therapeutic relationships in nursing; including, establishing a relationship; princi­ ples of teaching spiritual counseling; deterrents to relationships, such as, anxiety, aggression, pain, mourning, and social alienation. Taught concurrently with 202. 301 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING II - LECTURE (4) Medical-Surgical nursing problems of the adult patient; methods of intervention, using problem-solving techniques; pharmacology and nutrition. Prerequisite: 202. 301 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING II - LABORATORY (3) Clinical experience in the medical center and community hospitals. Twelve hours laboratory. Laboratory fee: $10.00. 302 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING III- LECTURE (3) Focus on the nursing process, including: assessing, planning, implementing, and evalu­ ating nursing intervention. Prerequisite: 301. 302 MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING III- LABORATORY (3) Experience as a clinical nursing practitioner. Twelve hours laboratory. Laboratory fee: $10.00. 401 MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH I - LECTURE (3) The child and his needs; effects of illness and hospitalization on children in various stages of development; nurse's role in patient and parent teaching. Prerequisite: 302. 401 MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH I - LABORATORY (3) Care of the hospitalized child in acute and long-term rehabilitative settings; utiliza­ tion of community resources.
