The Student Missionary Union is a student organization of which every student of Biola College is a member. A major function of SMU is to provide oppor tunities for students to share their faith in Christ by various means of evan gelism. The SMU Gospel Teams sing and speak in churches, colleges, high schools, and youth camps. The Student Missionary Union, under the sponsorship of World Opportunities, sends approximately 200 students into the urban Los Angeles area each week to share Christ. Once each week SMU sponsors the chapel program by which students are chal lenged with mission opportunities. By aranging for missionary speakers, financ ing the missionary project of several thousand dollars each year, presenting the annual Missionary Conference, and organizing missionary prayer groups, stu dents are made aware of worldwide missionary needs. The Student Missionary Union also sponsors a special missions club. The purpose of this club is to give to those interested in both home and foreign missions an opportunity to hear and to discuss matters of special interest in the Church's program of outreach. ASSOCIATED STUDENTS The Associated Students of Biola College, of which all students are members, has as its stated purpose: "to direct student affairs and to promote the interest and welfare of the students." The Associated Students' Council is composed of twenty-one members from the executive and legislative branches of the government. The Council includes from the executive branch the President, Vice-President, Business Manager, and Sec retary. Within the legislative branch there are the presidents of several organizations: Student Missionary Union, Biola Men, King's Daughters, and each class. The leg islative branch also includes Board Chairmen (Athletics, Social Affairs and Tra ditions, Public Events, College Union, Community Relations, Publications), a Parliamentarian, and three Representatives-at-large. A three-member Judicial Board exists to review decisions made by Council. Members of the Associated Students' Council have their offices located in the College Union Building. They convene weekly to discuss business, resolve con flicts of interest, and initiate programs. Apart from the specific functions of Board Chairmen and Organization presidents, Council members are responsible for formalized dialogue with the administration and faculty of the college in convey ing the consensus of the students. Also a Courier of coming events is published weekly and secretarial services are provided for all organizations through the Associated Students' Offices. The Associated Students are responsible for three chapels a week and an Inter Club Council, consisting of representatives from each club on campus. STUDENT PUBLICATIONS The Student Body sponsors two student publications: a weekly newspaper, the BIOLA CHIMES; and a yearbook, the BIOLAN. These serve to keep a record of school life, to interest young people in the College as a place of healthy activity, and to inform the friends of the school of items of current interest. 47
