MISSIONS
CLYDE COOK, Director Objectives: The objectives of the Missions Department are fourfold: (1) to help each career-missionary student be a competent, well-functioning missionary who is able to communicate the Gospel cross-culturally ; (2) to help each stu dent respond to the Church's world-wide commission and to his personal respon sibility in its fulfillment; (3) to provide the Christian community with an information center that will handle their inquiries concerning missions; and (4) that all those in the department will be obedient to the Lord and under His control so that they will carry out His will in world-wide mission. The Missions Department recommends three distinct programs preparatory to missionary activity. These programs are the following: These programs combine a major in Bible or Christian Education with the electives taken under the direction of the Department of Missions. These elec tives include: Anthropology 301 ; History 327 ; Linguistics 301 ; Philosophy 314; Sociology 404; and six additional units in appropriate areas. 3. SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR (Missions emphasis) This major is described under the Division of Social Sciences. Department Minor: The missions minor consists of 18 units including Anthro pology 301; History 327; Linguistics 301; Philosophy 314; and Sociology 404. Course selections made under the guidance of the Department. Courses directly related to missions are offered in several other departments and are included in the list below. 1. BIBLE-MISSIONS PROGRAM 2. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION-MISSIONS PROGRAM ANTHROPOLOGY 301 GENERAL CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3) Nature of culture; cultural growth and history; the range of cultural phenomena, including material culture, social organization, religion, language, and related topics . BIBLE 301 EARLY CHRISTIAN HISTORY-ACTS (3) The book of Acts with special emphasis on the missionary philosophy and activity of the early church and its current application. DOCTRINE 401 DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH (3) The doctrine of the Church, its origin, ordinances, and organization, with careful consideration given to denominational distinctives and the theological issues which underlie its mission. 57
