Principles of elementary education; content and methods of teaching science, and the language arts; two units devoted to r eading ; observation and participation in public elementary schools. Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Either semester. 321 ELEMENTARY METHODS AND CURRICULUM II (5) Content and methods of teaching mathematics and social studies; audio-visual methods and techniques; observation and participation in public elementary schools. Prerequi site: Departmental approval. Either semester. 340 PRINCIPLES AND CURRICULUM OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (3) Development, scope, and function of public education as it relates to the secondary school. Consideration of rural and urban schools, curriculum, vocational education, and special education programs; visits to junior and senior high schools and experimental programs included. 403* STUDENT TEACHING IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I (4) Laboratory experiences in a public school classroom under the direction of a qualified supervising teacher. Prerequisites: Completion of all other departmental requirements and departmental approval. Either semester. 404* STUDENT TEACHING IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL II (4) Laboratory experience similar to Education 403 at a different grade level. Education 403 and 404 are completed during the same semester. Either semester. 405 PROBLEMS SEMINAR (2) Consideration of topics related to the curriculum of the elementary school; special emphasis to the teaching of music and art. Co-requisite: 403-404. Either semester. 420 DIRECTED STUDY (1-3) Consideration of topics in elementary school curriculum according to needs of individual students. Either semester. 442 TEACHING IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL (4) Objectives, methods, and materials of teaching the various subjects in secondary schools (including audio-visual techniques) ; observation and participation in junior and senior high school classes. Required, before student teaching, of candidates for the Standard Teaching Credential with a Specialization in Secondary Teaching. Either semester. 443*, 444"' STUDENT TEACHING IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL (3, 3) Student teaching in the major field or in both the major and minor fields; participation for a semester in a regular secondary school teaching program under the guidance of qualified supervising teachers; includes a seminar each week in problems and procedures of secondary school teaching under the direction of college supervisors. Prerequisites: Completion of all other departmenta l requirements and departmental approve!. Either semester. 451 PHILOSOPHY OF THE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (2) Aims of Christian schools and means of achieving them; exploration of attitudes and convictions which Christian schools seek to develop in their students. Offered in summer school. *Students doing student teaching in the elementary program (403, 404) are limited to a maximum of 13 units that semester. Students doing student teaching in the secondary program (443, 444) are limited to a maximum of 15 units that semester. If the student is working, a reduction in load may be necessary. 61
