MUSIC
JACK SCHWARZ, Chairman Objectives. The objectives of the Department of Music are (1) to provide competent instruction in the field of music, (2) to offer specialized training for students desiring professional preparation in applied music, church music, music theory, and music education. · Entrance Requirements. In addition to the regular College entrance require ments, students entering the Department of Music as music majors or minors must take two additional tests: the Aliferis Music Achievement Test and the Kwalwasser-Ruch Test of Musical Accomplishment. These tests are given during orientation week prior to registration for the fall semester. Students un able to make a predetermined minimum score on these tests will not be admitted as music majors and minors. To clear this deficiency, the student must take Music 51 and earn at least a "C" grade. Students who intend to major in applied music must pass a performance audition at the beginning of their first semester in resi dence. Deficiencies in the performance and/or academic aspects of a student's music training must be removed before admission to the upper division music curriculum. Activities. The Department of Music provides opportunities for experience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Biola Chorale, Chamber Singers, Oratorio Chorus, The Other Side, Chamber Music Ensemble, String Ensemble, the La Mirada Symphony, and the Symphonic Band. AIi are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. Those majoring in music education are expected to join the student chapter of Music Educators National Conference.
