SCHOLARSHIPS To the ex tent th at scholarship bequ ests and other fun ds permit , Biola College g ives fin ancia l encoura gement to promi sing and worthy students. Two principal aims are th e basis for a ll award s: ( 1) to encourage scholarly endeav or by g ifted stud ents. a nd (2 ) to aid worth y s tud ents who are depen dent chi efl y upon th eir own effor ts to sec ure a co ll ege educa ti on or co uld not att end college without such ass istance. All awards are mad e for a peri od of one semes ter. but ma y be renewed on the basis of sati sfactory work . It should be clearl y und erstood that a studen t's fa ilure lo ma int a in sa ti sfa ctory sc holas ti c standin g during any semester will be suffi cient ca use for th e di scontinu ance of his award . Bi ola Coll ege is in ag reement with the followin g recommendation of the Assoc iati on of Coll ege Admi ss ions Counselors: "We soli cit the co-opera ti on of parent s and secondar y sc hool officers in discourag ing persons who do not need finan cia l aid fr om competin g with needy s tudents fo r th e use of coll ege scholarship fund s . To be elected an honor scholar is a ri ghtful ambiti on of any stud ent irrespect ive of finan cial status, but to expec t fin ancial cons id erati on wh en such is not needed is to request a college to take from some needy stud ent hi s oppo rtunit y to attend college." Bi ola College is in agreement with thi s poli cy with respect to all forms of finan cial ass istance. If a s tud ent ca n att end co ll ege without aid from the college. he should neither reques t nor accept such aid and thereby prevent some need y stud ent fr om receiving help who othe rwi se co uld not attend . Appli cation for all scholarships should be mad e to the Dean of Students. Blanks for this purpose will be furni shed upon request by the Office of the Dean of Students . Schol a rships a re awarded to stud ent s of high scholas tic achievement. Other criteria such as character, pe rsonalit y. leadership qualiti es, need, marked success in gene ral hi gh schoo l or college activities, special service 1 endered on behalf of the schoo l. and evid ence of abilit y to pursue advanced studies successfull y after g raduati on a re also given ca re ful consideration. The types of scholarships offered are as foll ows : academic, missionary, music , speech and se rvice. As a general rul e, sch olarships are awarded onl y to stud ents who expect to graduate from Biola College. In the event that a scholarship recipient wishes to transfer to anoth er college, th e award will be considered as a loan and must be repaid before a tran sc ript of th e student 's reco rd can be issued. Excepti ons to this rul e ma y be made in cases wh ere it has been recommended by the faculty that th e s tud ent tran sfer to a coll ege or uni ve rsity which can better serve the requirements of his maj or field. In addition to the sc holarships offe red by the college there are other scholarships awarded through the generosit y of donors. These include the Gene Bernard Scholarship, the George Ma yr Scholarship, the Reba M. Gilmer Scholarship. 25
