An adequate preparation of the elementary school teacher shou ld include: a satisfactory subject matter foun­ dation; a knowledge of the pupil; competency in the ski lls of teaching; the development and encouragement of critical judgment and creativity; and the development of social and persona l traits, ethical standards and Christian ideals of service. This program meets all the requirements for certification in California. Change in Requirements: The State Legislature has made changes in the California cert ification requirements. These changes affect students who have not completed 60 units of co llege work by January 1, 1964, have not enrolled in a professional course by that date and who will not have graduated by September, 1966. Students affected by these changes must complete a post­ graduate year of study in order to qualify for the Standard Teaching Creden· tial with a Specialization in Elementary Teaching. A major, a minor and professional studies are required. Students who have completed a B.A. pro­ gram and student teaching may qualify for the Condi ti onal Credentia l. The post-graduate year must be comp leted within five years after receipt of the Conditional Credential. Acceptable Majors for Elementary Education Students: Each candidate must complete a major in one of the following areas: Biological Science, English, History , Humanities, Language Arts. Music, Psychology, Social Science. (Refer to the proper Division for details.) Acceptable Minors for Elementary Education Students: Physical Educa­ tion, English , Foreign Language, Speech, Biological Science, History, Philosophy. Professional Courses Required: All cand idates for a Standard Credential in Elementary Teaching must comp lete 301. 303. 305-306. 307, 309, 312, 314, 403-404. Ed 320-321 may be subs tituted for 301 , 305-306, 307, 309, 312 and 314. Students working toward credential s must meet standards of physical fitness and professional aptitude. Information about these requirements may be secured from the Education Department. All students majoring within the division must complete 6 units of inter ­ mediate or advanced Foreign language. 301. PRINCIPLES AND CURRICULUM OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION. (2) Historical and sociological foundations of educa tion . Consideration of accepted principles of teaching and trends in curricular organization in the modern rural and urban elemen tary school. 40
