423. MUSIC EDUCATION IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL. (3) Purpose and procedures. Organization of co urses and activities, both choral and instrumen tal. Music appreciation. Study of methods, tech niques, and problems. Survey of materials. 425. PIANO PEDAGOGY. (1) For the teacher of private piano. Practi cal procedures used in tra,mng a student in touch . pedallir.g, genera l musicianship, memorization, proper practice habits, and sight-reading. Survey of graded literature. Planning of recitals . 427. TEACHING CLASS VOICE. (2) Teaching methods and practice in teaching. Evaluation of vocal methods. Observation in voice classes. 430. STUDENT TEACHI G - MUSIC. (4) Laboratory experiences in public school classrooms unde r the direction of qualified supervising teachers. Experience in teaching music on both elementary and secondary levels . A seminar of one hour per week included in the course req uiremen ts. Prerequisite: completion of all other department requirements. APPLIED MUSIC Private instruction is offered in the following: organ, piano, voice, brass instruments, string instruments. woodwind instruments, accordion*, and hymn playing*. 181. ORGAN CLASS I. Req uired of all beginning organ students. Includes basic keyboard and pedal techniques, pipe organ construction, and repertory. *191. PIANO CLASS I. Six to ten students. For th e student with little or no previous training who desires to study appli ed music. *192. PIANO CLASS II. Continuation of 191. * 193. VOICE CLASS I. Same description as 191. *194. VOICE CLASS II. Continuation of 193. *Not allowed for credit towa rd th e applied music requirement of the Music Majors. MUSIC ENSEMBLES Biola Chorale. (3 hours weekl y. 1 cred it per semester) Performance of choral works representing various styles and periods. Two-week tour during Spring semester. Open to all students by audition. Brass Ensemble. ( 2 hours weekly. 1 cred it per semester) Performance of the finest in brass repertoire. J oins with the Chorale in presenting choral and brass compositions in concert.
