SPANISH Students who have taken 2 yea rs of High School Spanish may not take Spanish 101 for credit. Students with 3 or 4 years of High School Spanish should consult with Department for proper placement. Students whose native language is Spanish may not take lower-division courses for credit.
Lower-division Courses 101, 102. ELEMENTARY SPANISH. (3, 3)
A course designed to give the student a background in the fundamen tals of pronunciation , grammar, conversation and read ing . (3 hours lecture, 1 hour lab.) 201, 202. INTERMEDIATE SPANISH. (3, 3) Advanced grammar, compositi on, increased facility rn reading and conversation. Upper-division Courses 301, 302. ADVANCED CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION. (3, 3) A course designed to give more advanced ability in conversation, read ing and writing Spanish. Prerequisite to further advanced courses. *404, 405. SURVEY OF SPANISH AMERICAN LITERATURE. (3, 3) A survey of the literature of Hispanic America from colonial to modern times: reading and discussion of the outstanding literary works and movements . Conducted in Spanish. *406, 407. SURVEY OF SPANISH LITERATURE. (3, 3) A survey of the literature of Spain from earliest times to present: read ing and discussion of the outstanding literary works and movements. Conducted in Spanish. 409. SPECIAL STUDIES. (1, 3 ) Individual research and writing for advanced students by special ar rangement. May be repeated in another area for credit. *To be offered in alternate years. The science of the articulate sounds of human speech. The classification, reproduction, and proper recording of speech-sounds. Some attention to the principles of phonetic change. 333. GENERAL LINGUISTICS.
