(3-3) First semester: a su rvey of the history of the ancient Mediterranean world from the ea rli est records of man to Protestant Reformation. Second semester: the deve lopment of civilization from the Reformation to the present. 203. SURVEY OF AMERICAN HISTORY. (3) A survey of American history from the Colonial period to the present. Attention given to the social , economic, political, and religious institu• tions that have played important roles in the development of _America. This course and Political Science 201 satisfies the state requirement for American History. 205, 206. UNITED STATES HISTORY. (3. 3J A study of the growth and deve!opment of the United States; colon iza tion, pre-revolutionary period. development of constitutional govern ment; social and economic influences in the nineteenth century; political development to the present da y : the United States as a world powe·r. This course satisfies the State requirement for American History and Constitution. Required of all History majors. 207. ENGLISH HISTORY. (31 A survey of English History from the Anglo-Saxon period to the devel opment of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Special emphasis on English political , social , and cultural institutions and their influence upon the United States. 301, 302. MEDIEVAL HISTORY. (3 -3) A survey of Western European history from the fall of Rome to the Protestant Reformation. A study of medi eval institutions with special emphasis on the transition in arts, letters, and learning from the medieval to the modern age. Includes the political , social, and religious phases of the Reformation. 303. ANCIENT HISTORY. (3) A study of the ancient empires of the East and the Greek Peninsula to the defeat of the Greeks by th e Romans. Special attention given to art, literature, and political institutions and their subsequent influence upon Western Civilization. 304. ROMAN HISTORY. (3) A study of Roman history from its beginning to the Fall of the Empire. Emphasis upon Rome's part in the preparation of the Mediterranean world for the spread of Christianity. and Rome's contributions to Western civilization. 72
