An adequate preparation of the teacher should include: a satisfactory subject matter foundation; a knowledge of the pupil; competency in the skills of teaching; the development and encouragement of critical judgment and crea­ tivity; and the development of social and persona l tra its, ethical standards and Christian ideals of service. Requirements. In order to qualify for the Standard Teaching Credential with a specialization in Elementary Teaching, a major, professional studies, and in certain cases a minor or minors are required. In order to qualify for the Credential on Condition a major and professional studies must be completed leading to a baccalaureate degree. An additional thirty units of course work (including the minor when required) must be completed within seven years of the first employment in elementary teaching under the Credential on Condition. In order to qualify for the Standard Teaching Credential with a Specialization in Secondary Teaching a major, professional studies, and in certain cases a minor or minors a re required. An additional year of college or university postgraduate education in an approved institution is also required. At the present time Biola College does not offer the year of postgraduate education but does offer many majors, minors and professional courses meeting the requirements of the Secondary Credential. Students who under the guidance of the education department complete appropriate courses of study and receive the baccalaureate degree from Biola can finish their requirements for the credential in a postgraduate year in an approved institution.
