340. PRINCIPLES AND CURRICULUM of SECONDARY EDUCATION. (3)
Development, scope, and function of Public Education as it relates to the secondary school. Consideration of rural and urban schools, curriculum, vocational education and special education programs. Observation and participation in jun ior and senior high school classes. Laboratory experiences in a public school classroom under the direction of a qualified supervising teacher. A seminar of one hour per week included in the course requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of all other departmental require ments and departmental approval. Laboratory experience similar to Education 403 at a differ ent grade level. Education 403 and 404 are completed during the same semester. An introduction to children's literature on all grade levels in elementary school. Historical trends, criteria for selection, and a student's compiled bibliography covering children's reading interests and expressional forms . Role of the teacher in guidance; techniques of counseling; a consideration of the total guidance program of the elemen tary school. Prerequisite: 311. 450. HISTORY and PHILOSOPHY of EDUCATION. (3) A seminar in the history and philosophy of education in terms of the great problems which have been encountered in the past and continue to require solution at the present time. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS Oj ective. The objectives of the Physical Education program are: 1, to teach sports skills; 2, to teach the necessity for, and the techniques of, physical fitness; 3, to provide wholesome recrea-. tional activities and intramural sports; 4, to conduct intercollegiate athletics; and 5, to provide a major in physical education. Students are required to complete four semesters of physical education. All freshmen and transfer students will select PE 100, Physical Education Orientation, during the fall semester. Students studying for the elementary school teaching certificate, but not selecting physical education as a minor area of concentra tion should select PE 201 and three other physical education activi ty classes. 403.
