A regional study of the countries of Middle and South Amer­ ica. The geographic factors, physical and cultural, that are basic to an understanding of the historical development of Latin America. HISTORY D epartment Mei.for: 30 units of history beyond the general edu­ cation requirement, of which 24 must be upper division and includ­ ing 420, 421. Political Science 301, 302 are required as supporting courses. 18 units of the major will be chosen from either the Euro­ pean or the American bloc of courses offered in the department. Department Minor: 18 units beyond the general education re­ quirement, of which 12 must be upper division. The student is advised to take at least 12 units from one bloc of courses. 101, 102. HISTORY OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION. (3, 3) First semester: a survey of the history of the ancient Medi­ terranean world from the earliest records of man to Prot­ estant Reformation. Second semester: the development of civilization from the Reformation to the present. 205, 206. UNITED STATES HISTORY. (3, 3) Growth and development of the United States; colonization, prerevolutionary period, development of constitutional gov­ ernment, social and economic influences in the nineteenth century; political development to the present day; the United States as a world power. Meets state requirements in history and government. A survey of English history from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. The first semester deals with the formation of British society to 1688. The second semester concentrates on Britain in the modern world. Special emphasis is given to political, social, and cultural institutions and their influence upon the United States. 207, 208. ENGLISH HISTORY. (3, 3) The ancient empires of the East and Greek Peninsula to the defeat of the Greeks by the Romans. Special attention given to art, literature, and political institutions and their sub­ sequent influence upon Western civilization. Roman history from its beginning to the fall of the Empire. Emphasis upon Rome's part in the preparation of the Medi­ terranean world for the spread of Christianity, and Rome's contributions to Western civilization. 209. ANCIENT HISTORY. (3) 210.
