Note: Students who select a liberal arts major may count only a total of 30 units of Biblical Studies and Theology toward the required units for a degree. Any liberal arts major may also take as electives a maximum of six units in Christian Education and/ or Missions. The maximum limit for recognized correspondence courses in Bible is six units. Part-time students (less than 12 units per semester) are required to include at least one Biblical Studies and Theology course within each 15 units completed at Biola College unless the 30 unit requirement has been met. Part-time students seeking a degree from Biola College must complete the entire requirement as outlined above. General Education Requirement It is the purpose of the general education requirementto introduce the student to areas of study that mature the mind, open new vistas of appreciation and understanding, enrich social relationships, and develop skills and aptitudes that can aid the student in furthering his personal and social usefulness. Since it is the purpose of a liberal arts education to create a broad base upon which to build one's continuing education, the student is allowed to select from the following courses to build his own base in the liberal arts. The courses that meet the general education requirement are the following: COMMUNICATIONS 3 units The following speech communications courses fulfill the general education requirement: Com. 101 , 105, 144 and 212. Permission of the department is required for any other course to meet the general education requirement. ENGLISH 6 units *110 Studies in Criticism and Composition *A grade of A in either 110A or 110B exempts the student from taking the other semester and completes the requirement. FINE ARTS 3 units Any one of the following courses will meet this requirement: 100 Art_Introduction, 101 Introduction of Music , or 450 Advanced Studies in Literature Drama (with consent) FOREIGN LANGUAGE The graduation requirement in foreign language depends upon the major selected. The absolute minimum is one semester of four units (or two years of the same high school language} . Most students must complete course work which will take them through the first semester of a second year in a language (twelve units). Those with four years of the same high school language have completed this requirement. Students who have had a foreign language in high school and wish to continue the same language in college should consult with the foreign language department for proper placement. International students for whom English is a second language need not take a foreign language. Students entering with no foreign language or desiring to begin a language in college may find they will need to complete more units than the minimum listed for a degree in their major. HISTORY 8 units 100 The West and the World 4 units Students who may have completed 3 units of World Civilization are advised to take 110 History and the Biblical Record to complete the requirement. 200 United States History 4 units Students who may have completed 3 units of United States History are advised to take 210 Themes in American History to complete the requirement. LITERATURE 3 units 250 Introductory Studies in Literature or one of the following: (with consent of department) 360, 370, 440, 450, or foreign language literature PHILOSOPHY 3 units Any one of the following will meet this requirement: 202 Introduction to Philosophy 305 Ethics 205 Logic 303 Modem Philosophy 301 Greek and Roman Philosophy PHYSICAL EDUCATION 4 semesters Physical Education (Activity) P.E. Orientation is mandatory for freshmen. Exempt if 21 upon entrance. (See page 84 for complete information on Physical Education) PSYCHOLOGY (or alternate) 3 units Psychology 200 or Sociology 220 or Anthropolog~ 300 or 303 SCIENCE/ MATHEMATICS Aminimum of eight units is required in science and/or mathematical sciences. Biology 100with 110, and Physical Science 101 have both been designed for the student with a limited background in science. Those with a strong background may choose other courses with guidance from the division and/ or by qualifying through proficiency testing in biology, chemistry, or mathematical sciences.
