431 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (3) Relationship between communication and culture with emphasis on factors effecting the quality and processes of interpersonal communication . 432 HISTORY OF TV AND RADIO (3) Beginning, growth and development of radio and television in the United States from 1920 to present. 435 PSYCHOLOGY OF COMMUNICATION (3) Discussion of man as a manipulator: introduction to transactional analysis; analysis of impact of verbal and nonverbal forms of communication as modes of persuasion. 437 ADVANCED STUDIES IN WRITING (3) In-depth study of writing feature material for newspapers and magazines, or advanced work in the short story from. Prerequisite: 332 or 401 or equivalent. Alternate years , offered 1976-77. 440 COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP (1-3) Limited to qualified seniors who wish to gain professional experience working with a secular or Christian mass media organization. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Permission of internship coordinator required. 450 COMMUNICATION PRACTICUM (1-3) Directed practical experience in the various fields of communication. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 units. Permission of the department must be secured the semester prior to enrolling for course. 460 READER'S THEATRE (3) Programming and presentation of prose, poetry, and drama by two or more readers using the skills of the oral interpreter as well as those of the actor. Methods of preparation, performance, and directing. May be repeated for a total of 6 units. 470 COMMUNICATIONS SEMINAR (1-3) Various aspects and problems in the field of communications. 480 DIRECTED RESEARCH (1-3) Individual research in an area of communications determined in consultation with the intructor. May be repeated for a maximum of three units . Prerequisite: consent. INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES The Interdisciplinary Major in Communication Studies seeks to provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of the process, nature, and effects of human communication. The major may select an emphasis in either Mass Communication or Interpersonal Communication which consists of 30 units beyond general education (24 of the units must be upper division.) The specialization in Mass Communication centers upon the dynamics of communication designed to influence human conduct in macrocosmic social contexts. The specialization in Interpersonal Communication centers upon small group, face to face communicative interaction ranging from dyadic to intercultural levels. Each student must take a 3 unit performance course in oral communication and a 3 unit performance course in written communication. STUDIES IN MASS COMMUNICATION: Select 24 units from the following courses. At least one course must be selected from each group. 1. Theory and Method of Mass Communication: 435 , History 328, Sociology, 352, 354. 2. Modes of Mass Communication: Communication 310 (May be repeated with different course content to include; Religious , Political , and Legal.) 3. Media and Media History: Communication 331, 342, Art 313, Business 274. 4. Language Theory and History: English 350, History 310, Anthropology-Linguistics 311 , Philosophy 102. STUDIES IN INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Select 24 units from the following groups .
