OBJECTIVES: The major function of the department of education is professional preparation for teaching and administration. Upon completion of the teaching credential program, it is intended that the student will have a satisfactory subject matter foundation; understand pupil behavior; be competent in the skills of teaching; be able to develop and encourage critical judgement and creativity; and will have developed strong social and personal traits, high ethical standards, and Christian ideals of service. Credential Programs Requirement: In order to qualify for a Preliminary teaching credential one must complete one of the majors listed below leading to a baccalaureate degree and professional studies including student teaching. Thirty units of upper division or graduate course-work must be completed within five years in order to secure the Clear credential. Two types of credentials are available: single subject and multiple subject. "Single subject" instruction means the practice of assignment of teachers and students to specified subject matter courses, as is commonly practiced in California high schools and most California junior high schools. "Multiple subject" instruction means the practice of assignment of teachers and students for multiple subject matter instruction, as is commonly practiced in California elementary schools. Recommended majors for single subject credential: art, biological science, business administration , communications, English , history, humanties, (literature or Spanish concentration) mathematics, music, physical education, physical science, social science. Recommended majorfor multiple subject credential; Diversified. Those who choose one of the following will be required to pass a state authorized examination to earn the credential: art, biological science, communications, English , history, humanities , mathematics, music, physical science, psychology,social science, sociology. Diversified Major: The Diversified Major is designed for the preparation of elementary school teachers. It consists of twenty-one units in each of the four following areas: 1. English, including grammar, literature, composition, and speech. 2. Mathematics and the physical and life sciences. 3. Social sciences, other than education and education methodology. 4. Humanities and fine arts, including foreign language. At least twenty-four upper division units must be taken and appropriate general education courses may be included in the eighty-four total units. Students planning to choose this major are required to see an advisor in the Education Department. Professional courses required: All candidates for the Clear teaching credential in multiple subject instruction must complete the following Education courses: 300,310, 330,350,370, 440, 450. (310 is not required for the Preliminary credential.) All candidates for the Clear teaching credential in single subject instruction must complete the following Education courses: 300, 310, 330, 370, 390, 440, 450. (Candidates with majors in art, music or physical education are not required to take 370.) A course in health science is required of all candidates for a Clear credential. Students who wish to become candidates for a teaching credential must apply for admission to the education program in their sophomore year or immediately upon transfer into the college if beyond that year. Other requirements of the Education department are stated in the Guide for Education Students, which may be secured from the department office. 300 INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING (2) The nature and function of the school and the development of competencies required for success as a teacher. Each week there will be one hour of lecture and discussion and a three-hour assignment as a teacher assistant in a local school. Successful completion of this course constitutes one of the requirements for admission to the education program. 310 SOCIAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (3) The issues facing education today in light of historical, philosophical and sociological principles. Special attention given to cultural and ethnic problems affecting schools and teaching. Prerequisite: 300. 314 AUDIO-VISUAL INSTRUCTION (2) Need and functions of audio-visual techniques in teaching; development skills in use of materials and equipment; sources of materials and equipment.
