OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the Missions Department are to enable every student to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the theological , historical , sociological, anthropological , and linguistic issues of missions; to enable every student to demonstrate a personal responsibility to the mandate given by the Lord Jesus Christ to make disciples of every nation; to enable every student completing the major to demonstrate competency as a career missionary in the areas of theology, sociology, history, anthropology, and linguistics as they relate to missions; to make available an information center which will answer inquiries concerning missions; to demonstrate that all those in the Department are obedient to the Lord, as evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in their lives , so that they will carry out His program of discipling all peoples. The Missions Department recommends the Social Science major with the Missions Emphasis as the best prepartation for missionary service. SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR (Missions emphasis) This major, with a missions emphasis consists of 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division: A 15-unit concentration in History,Sociology, or Anthropology-Linguistics: and nine units in one of the remaining fields , and six units in the other field. Anthropology-Linguistics 300, 311 , History 428, Sociology 404 and 405 are required. The student is urged to consult the Department of Misslons when planning his course of study. Courses directly related to missions are offered in several other departments and are included in the list below. ANTHROPOLOGY-LINGUISTICS 300 GENERAL CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3) Nature of culture; cultural growth and history; the range of cultural phenomena, including material culture, social organization, religion, language, and related topics.

ANTHROPOLOGY-LINGUISTICS 311 GENERAL LINGUISTICS (3) Descriptive and historical study of language , linguistics analysis; language classification, language in its cultural and social settings.

BIBLICAL STUDIES 300 EARLY CHRISTIAN HISTORY-ACTS (3) The book of Acts with special emphasis on the missionary philosophy and activity of early church and its current application.

THEOLOGY 470 THEOLOGICAL RESEARCH (1-3) Research methods employed in the solution of specific doctrinal problems. Sections offered every year in areas such as Biblical Authority, Contemporary Problems, Missions, Prophetic Problems, Doctrinal Bibliography.

HISTORY 428 HISTORY OF THE EXPANSION OF CHRISTIANITY (3) The background, origin, development, and spread of the Christian religion; emphasis on the modem era.

MISSIONS 312 JEWISH LIFE AND EVANGELISM (3) The history of the Jews, their festivals and customs, their fundamental beliefs; effective methods of evangelization.

MISSIONS 314 VARIANT RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS (3) Survey of various religious movements in America with an analysis of their distinctive differences when compared with historical Christianity. MISSIONS 401, 402 PRACTICUM SEMINAR (1-3,1-3) Supervised exposure to basic principles in the areas of disease prevention, communication with supporters, photography, graphic arts , mechanics, construction, bookkeeping, and related subjects. Designed for the student who is planning on a career in missions.
