Objectives: The objectives of the Music Department are (1) to provide an atmosphere for growth in musicianship and creative expression; (2) to motivate students toward the development of specific musical skills through disciplined study; (3) to encourage social and spiritual growth through ensembles and open dialogue in and out of the classroom; (4) to afford an opportunity for musical study to those who are not majors but show a deep interest in music. Entrances Requirements: In addition to the regular college entrance requirements a student desiring to enter the Music Department must complete a Music Department application for admission and submit a tape recording (five-ten minutes in length) demonstrating his performance ability. In addition, all entering students must take a music theory placement examination. This examination is designed to evaluate the student's capacity to identify, dictate, and sing all major and minor scales, all simple intervals in isolation within the compass of an octave, all triads; and perform exercises in simple and compound meters. For comprehensive preparation for the following programmed texts are available: Basic Materials of Music Theory, Paul 0. Harder; Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music, Part I, Paul 0 . Harder (both published by Allyn and Bacon); Programmed Ear Training, Horacek/Zefhoff (Harcourt, Brace and World). Those with insufficient background upon entrance will be asked to take necessary remedial instruction before enrolling in Music 103. It is also expected that the entering student be capable of pursuing college level work in his applied area. Specific information as to level of literature and technical studies is available from each applied division within the music department. Piano Proficiency: All non-keyboard music majors must pass a piano proficiency examination prior to the granting of a degree in music. Since keyboard facility is important to every music major, students are expected to meet keyboard proficiency requirements prior to their junior year. Specific information regarding the piano proficiency examination is available from the Music Department office. All entering non-keyboard music majors must take a placement examination with the Class Piano Coordinator for assignment to an appropriate section of class piano. All students must remain enrolled in class piano every semester until proficiency is obtained. Activities: The Music Department provides opportunities for experience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Biola Chorale, Chamber Music Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Oratorio Chorus, String Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. All are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. (The exception is oratorio chorus which is open to all students without audition when offered.) Individual performance opportunities are offered through weekly student recitals, weekly music-at-noon concerts, and Junior and Senior recitals. The Music Department concert series features outstanding guest artists as well as its own widely-known faculty. Opportunities off Campus: The stature of Los Angeles as a music center provides exceptional opportunities for hearing the world' s leading artists, as well as outstanding college and church music organizations. Service Opportunities: The Los Angeles metropolitan area furnishes many opportunities for remunerative service in music. There are frequent openings for competent organists, church choir directors, soloists, and accompanists. Scholarships: Music scholarships and performance awards in various amounts are available to qualified students. Majors: Aprofessional degree (Bachelor of Music) is offered with emphasis in one of the following areas: applied music, composition, and music education . Students interested in pursuing one of these emphases must demonstrate a high level of performance potential and commitment to music as a profession. A non-profession degree (Bachelor of Arts) with a major in music is offered. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree are exempt from the general education requirement in foreign language, literature , and need take only five units in mathematics and/ or science. All Bachelor of Music candidates must complete a basic core of 51 units of music which consists of the following: Music 101 (fulfills general education requirement for fine arts) , 103, 104, 201 , 202, 203,204,221 , 301,302, 305, 306, 313, 401 , 402, applied music (principal instrument) 8 units , applied music (secondary instrument) 4 units and ensemble 8 units. The remaining units in music are to be taken by advisement with the following stipulations understood: 1. Students with emphasis in applied music must complete a minimum of 21 units in their principal instrument as well as appropriate literature and pedagogy. Applied students must also perform a junior recital (30 minutes) and a senior recital (60 minutes). 2. Students with emphasis in composition must take 311, 312, 403, 411 , and 412.
