One or more sections will be offered each semester in areas such as: piano, organ, voice , orchestra instruments. 440 SPECIAL STUDIES IN CHURCH MUSIC (3) One or more sections offered periodically such as: Church Music History, Church Music Philosophy, and Church Music Ministries. Church Music History: Music in the Bible; historical development of traditional orders of worship; orders of worship in non-liturgical churches; the writing and use of hymns ; hymn tunes; the use of choirs and instruments. Church Music Philosophy: The Biblical foundation of church music; the psychology of worship; the ministry of the director and organist; congregational participation; current trends in church music. Church Music Ministries: The development of a church music program; graded choirs; the relation of the director of musical ministries to the congregation, the music committee , and the pastor; music budgets; music in the church school; music for worship, evangelism, and fellowship; church music and the arts; problems in church music. 480 DIRECTED RESEARCH (1-4) Independent study in areas such as history, literature, pedogogy, church music. Each student assigned to a faculty memberfor guidance and evaluation. Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing and consent of instructor. Ensembles BIOLA CHORALE (1) Performance of choral literature representing a variety of styles and periods. Membership by audition (60-70 members). CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLE (1) Encompasses a wide variety of chamber groupings and chamber music literature. The following ensemble combinations are commonly organized under this heading: Brass ensembles, quintets , quartets , trios ;wind ensembles, quintets , quartets , trios; piano ensembles, two piano repertoire and chamber music. Open to keyboard and other instrumental students by audition . CHAMBER SINGERS (1) Performance of traditional and contemporary choral compositions including works sung in foreign languages and with instrumental accompaniment. Limited enrollment by audition (16-24 members). LA MIRADA SYMPHONY (1) Open by audition to string, woodwind , brass , and percussion performers. ORATORIO CHORUS (0) Performance of major choral compositions , offered occasionally. Open to all students. STAGE BAND WORKSHOP (1) To provide Music Education majors and other interested students experience in jazz techniques and literature. Alarge volume and a wide variety of literature is played, discussed , and evaluated as to its prospective use at the various levels of secondary and collegiate education. At least one public performance per semester is scheduled. Membership by audition. STRING ENSEMBLE (1) To provide string majors and other capable students with experience in ensemble techniques and literature ; to form a nucleus for chamber orchestral performance, especially in conjunction with departmental choral ensembles. Membership by audition. SYMPHONIC BAND (1) To provide experience in ensemble techniques and performance of band literature for band instrument majors and other capable students. Membership by audition.
