General Education Requirement It is the purpose of the general education requirement to introduce the student to areas of study that mature the mind, open new vistas of appreciation and understanding, enrich social relationships, and develop skills and aptitudes that can aid the student in furthering his personal and social usefulness. Since it is the purpose of a liberal arts education to create a broad base upon which to build one's continuing education, the student is allowed to select from the follow­ ing courses to build his own base in the liberal arts. The courses that meet the general education requirement are the following:

DIVISION OF EDUCATION I

Physical Education (Activity) P.E. Orientation is mandatory. 4 semesters Exempt if 21 upon entrance. One of the following: Psychology 204, 205, or 310 or One of the following: Anthropology 301 or 303, Sociology 202

DIVISION OF FINE ARTS I

Any one of the following courses will meet the Fine Arts requirement: ART 101 Art Appreciation 3 units Musrc 103 Music Appreciation 3 units 105 Introduction to Music Literature 3 units ENGLISH 320 Studies in Drama (with consent of department) 3 units DIVISION OF HUMANITIES I COMMUNICATIONS Any performance course in communications (speech) fulfills the general edu­ cation requirement. This includes 101, 144, 205, 212, 224, and 261. Permission of the instructor is required for any other course to meet the general education requirement. ENGLISH "'101, 102 Criticism and Composition or 105, 106 English for Foreign Students 6 units '''A grade of A in either 101 or 102 exempts the student from taking the other semester and completes the requirement. LITERATURE 200, 201, or 202 or 309, 310, 320, 322, 324, 403, 406, 407, 408 (with consent of 3 units department) or foreign language literature FOREIGN LANGUAGE 8 units This requirement of eight units in a foreign language is based upon the premise that the student plans to continue a high school language in which he has two 31
