401 SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DRAMA (3) The plays of Corneille, Moliere, and Racine. Alternate years, offered 1971-72. 402 NINETEENTH CENTURY NOVEL (3) The novels of Chateaubriand, Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola. Alternate years, offered 1971-72. German Students who have taken 2 years of high school German may not take German 101 for credit. Students with 3 or 4 years of high school German should consult with department for proper placement. In following the sequence of courses in German, the student roust have a minimum grade of "C" to qualify for enroll­ ment in subsequent courses. 101, 102 ELEMENTARY GERMAN (4, 4) An intensive course developing the skills necessary for hearing and reading compre­ hension and simple written German. Five hours each week. 201 INTERMEDIATE GERMAN (4) A grammar review with readings in German literature. Collateral readings in the field of each student's special interest. Five hours each week. 302 CONVERSATIONAL GERMAN (3) Practical conversation and writing with special emphasis on the idiomatic use of the language. 303 GERMAN LIFE AND CULTURE (3) An introduction to the important features and major contributions of the German people; readings in works of literary, cultural, and scientific significance. 304, 305 GERMAN LITERATUkE (3, 3) German literature from the earliest monuments to contemporary writings. Alternate years, offered 1971-72. 322 GERMAN FOLKLORE (3) An introduction to the German folk traditions with readings in the German folk tale, legendry, folksong, and balladry. Alternate years, offered 1971-72. An introduction to the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Classical Greek with practice in reading simple passages in the Attic dialect; relationship between Classical Attic and Greek of the New Testament. 201, 202 INTERMEDIATE GREEK GRAMMAR (3, 3) Review and advance in grammar and syntax with reading in both Classical and New Testament Greek. Prerequisite: 101, 102 or equivalence. 301, 302 HELLENISTIC GREEK (3, 3) Readings in the Septuagint and the New Testament together with selections from Jewish, patristic, and pagan writers of the Hellenistic period. Prerequisite: two years of Greek. 405 INTRODUCTION TO NEW TESTAMENT TEXTUAL CRITICISM (3) A survey of the materials, history, and theories of New Testament textual criticism.
