Curriculum and methods of elementary school arithmetic Introduction to the newer approaches to arithmetic. Prerequisites: Ed. 301, 303, and Psych. 301. 312. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE METHODS. (3) Emphasis given to the materials and procedures used in modern Elementary School Studies and Science programs. Unit construction. Consideration of curri• culum trends and the function of Social Studies and Science in an integrated program. Prerequisites: Ed. 301 , 303, and Psych. 301. 314. AUDIO-VISUAL. (1) The operation of tape recorders, 16 mm, opaque, slide and filmstrip, and over· head proj ectors with t achistascopic and miscroscopic adaptors. Consideration given to the construction and use of the three dimensional bulletin board. 317. KINDERGARTEN METHODS. (2) Principles and practices of early childhood education; organization and tech• niques of kindergarten. Prerequisites: Ed 301, 303, Psych. 301. 403. STUDENT TEACHING. (8) Laboratory experiences in public school classrooms under the direction of qualified supervising teachers. A seminar of one hour per week included in the course requirements. Prerequisite: Completion of all other departmental require• ments. 420. COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. (2) A study of the role of the teacher in guidance; techniques of counseling; a consideration of the total guidance program of the elementary school. Prerequisites: 301, 303, Psych. 301.

LIBRARY SCIENCE Obiective. The objective of this department is to provide instruction in the organiza tion of personal libraries and files, to provide the basic training for library work in school and church library situations, and to give a working knowledge of bibliographic and basic literature in the various disciplines usually included in liberal arts education and in the specialized curricula of Biola College. Skill tests are given in methods courses. Requirements for a Minor in Library Science. Eighteen units are required for a minor in Library Science. Stuednts who complete the minor receive a Certificate. Education 302 and English 410 may be credited toward this minor, provided they are not credited toward other majors or minors.

LIBRARIANSHIP

301. Filing and Indexing. (1) A study of the handling of pamphlets, clippings, notes, and other non-book materials. Indexing of these materials, together with analytical indexing of books and periodicals. Designed for pastors and Christian workers, as well as being a specialized course for Library Science students. 40
