MISSIONS Objectives:

The objectives of the Missions Department are threefold: (1) to prepare students for missionary service; (2) to make each student fully aware of the Church's world-wide commission and personal responsibility in its ful­ fillment; (3) to set forth clearly the needs and problems of mission fields and mission churches. The Missions Department recommends three distinct programs preparatory to missionary activity. These programs are the following: BIBLE-MISSIONS PROGRAM OR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION-MISSIONS PROGRAM These programs combine a major in Bible or Christian Education with the elec­ tives taken under the direction of the Department of Missions. These electives include Sociology 401, 404; Philosophy 314; Anthropology 301; Linguistics 331; and six additional units in appropriate areas. SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR This major, with a missions emphasis, consists of 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division in the Social Sciences: 15 units from History, 6 units from Sociology, 6 units from Anthropology and 3 units from any area in the division. History 418, 419; Sociology 401, 404; and Anthropology 301 are required. The fo llowing supporting courses are required: Linguistics 331 and Philosophy 314. The student is urged to consult the Director of Missionary Activities when planning his courne of Rtudy. Department Minor: The missions minor consists of 20 units, including Doctrine 401; Sociology 401, 404; History 418; and Philosophy 314. Course selections will be made under t he guidance of the department. Courses directly related to missions are offered in several other departments and are included in the list below. BIBLE 301 THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES (3) The book of Acts with special emphasis on the missionary philosophy and activity of the early church and its current application. MISSIONS 312 JEWISH MISSIONS (2) The history of the Jews, their festivals and customs, their fundamental beliefs; effective methods of evangelization. PHILOSOPHY 314 PHILOSOPHY OF WORLD RELIGIONS (3) The philosophies and beliefs of the world's leading religions. Alternate years, offered 1969-70. DOCTRINE 401 DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH (3) The doctrine of the Church, its origin, ordinances, and organization, with careful consideration given to denominational distinctives and the theological issues which underlie its mission. SOCIOLOGY 404, 405 SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND CHURCH GROWTH (3, 3) Sociological structures and their relationship to the principles and ,practices of church establishment and expansion. HISTORY 418 HISTORY OF THE EXPANSION OF CHRISTIANITY (3) The background, origin, development, and spread of the Christian religion; emphasis on the modern era. 50
