A non-technical course designed exclusively for non-music majors to develop a more sympathetic and enjoyable acquaintance with musical art. No previous ability in the reading of music necessary. Brief survey of music history with numerous musical illustrations; various types of music; basic principles of music form; methods of listen­ ing; characteristics of various instruments ; theme of well-known works. Either semester. 105 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC LITERATURE (3) An historical survey of music literature with emphasis on comparative analysis of musical styles, forms and performance media from the Renaissance to the present. Prerequisite: Limited ability in the reading of music. Either semegter. 305 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE I (2) The history of music of Pre-Christian, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods ( Pre-Christian age through 17th century). Prerequisite: 105. 306 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE II (2) The history of music of the Baroque and the early Classic pe riods (18th century). Alternate years, offered 1969-70. 421 MUSIC LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN (2) Rote songs, rhythms, reading songs, creative activities, and other music literature suitable for children's voices and interests from kindergarten through the sixth grade.
