NISHIDA, Chairman Objectives: The objectives of the department are (1) to acquaint the student with the principal problems and issue<s in sociology; (2 ) to teach application of knowl edge to occupations in sociology; and (3) to prepare for further professional study. Premajor and Preminor R equirement: 202. Department Major: 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division, including 402 and 409. In addition, Psychology 206 is required as a supporting course. Department Minor: 15 units of upper division courses. 202 SOCIOLOGY (3) Survey of social groups; their fields and methods, their interactions and effects on the individual; consideration of culture, roles, socialization, social classes, institutions, and minority groups. SOCIOLOGY 301 MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY (3) The family as a social institution; historical development of the modern family; current trends in family structure and functions; problems of family life; analysis of American courtship and marriage patterns. 303 JUVENILE DELINQUENCY (3) Character, extent, and causes of juvenile delinquency; social diagnosis and case study; modern methods of treatment; personal and environmental conditioning factors; survey of methods employed in research. Spring semester. 304 CRIMINOLOGY (3) Social and psychological factors in criminal behavior; criminal law and criminal justice; prevention and control; trends in theory and correctional procedures, probation, parole. Fall semester. 305 ETHNIC AND MINORITY GROUPS (3) Analysis of ethnic and cultural minorities in the United States; theory and practice of intergroup relations. 306 POPULATION (3) Population theory, composition, distribution, growth, and migration with differential fertility and mortality rates of groups and nations; national and international migration and overpopulation problems.
