The objectives of the counseling program have been interrelated with the dis ciplinary system of the school. A minimum number of rules is combined with instruction in Christian principles of conduct for the purpose of encouraging students toward mature self-guidance. The college offers assistance in Guidance and Placement through the Counseling Center. The student is counseled and offered a wide variety of tests to assist him in dealing with problems in the educational and vocational areas and in personal and social problems related to these areas and to give guidance in career planning. Placement services include information relating to available jobs and opportunities to make contacts with potential employers in industry, government, Christian organizations, and the professions. SCHOLARSHIPS, LOANS, AND STUDENT AID The College is able to provide varying amounts of financial assistance in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, and jobs, or some combination of these to worthy and qualified students. The total number and amounts of awards made each year are based upon resources available from scholarship endowments, annual gifts restricted to scholarship awards, and the general funds of the college. The 1111 funds are the consequence of the desire of the college and its friends to recog- nize merit and to insure a balanced student body. All awards are made for one year and in most cases may be renewed on the basis of satisfactory work and financial need. Other bases for the selection of recipients of financial assistance are scholastic excellence, aptitude test scores, and the appli cant's general record of activities and citizenship. Biola College participates in the College Scholarship Service (CSS) of the College Entrance Examination Board. Participants in CSS subscribe to the principle that the amount of financial aid granted a student should be based upon financial need. The CSS assists colleges and universities and other agencies in determining the student's need for financial assistance. Entering students seeking financial assist ance are required to submit a copy of the Parents' Confidential Statement (PCS) form to the College Scholarship Service, designating Biola College as one of the recipients. The PCS form may be obtained from a secondary school or from the College Scholarship Service, P.O. Box 176, Princeton, New Jersey, or P.O. Box 1025, Berkeley, California, 94704. This form should be filed as early as possible. The word "package" has recently made its way into scholarship programs. This word implies the use of grants, scholarships, loans, and/or work-study jobs to meet the need of a given student. Increasingly, the college is employing this approach to student aid. The use of loans and campus jobs enables the Com mittee to spread available scholarship money over a larger number of cases and thus assist a greater number of deserving students. Scholarships Scholarships are awarded by the scholarship awards committee to students of high scholastic achievement. Such other criteria as character, personality, leader ship qualities, financial need, marked success in general high school or college activities, special service rendered on behalf of the college, and evidence of ability to pursue advanced studies successfully after graduation are also given careful consideration. Scholarship awards are made for a period of one year; they range
