Objectives: The objectives of the Missions Department are threefold: (1) to prepare students for missionary service; (2) to make each student fully aware of the Church's world-wide commission and personal responsibility in its ful­ fillment; (3) to set forth clearly the needs and problems of mission fields and mission churches . The Missions Department recommends three distinct programs preparatory to missionary activity. These programs are the following: BIBLE-MISSIONS PROGRAM OR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION-MISSIONS PROGRAM These programs combine a major in Bible or Christian Education with the electives taken under the direction of the Department of Missions. These elec­ tives include: Anthropology 301; History 327; Linguistics 301; Philosophy 314; Sociology 404; and s ix additional units in appropriate areas. SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR This major, with a missions emphasis, is described under the Division of Social Sciences. Depa1·tment Minor: The mis sions minor consists of 20 units including Anthro­ pology 301; Hi story 327; Linguistics 301; Philosophy 314; and Sociology 404. Course selections made under the guidance of the Department. Courses directly related to missions are offered in several other departments and are included in the list below. ANTHROPOLOGY 301 GENERAL CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY Nature of culture; cultural growth and hi story; the range of cultural phenomena , including ma terial culture, social organization, religion, language, a nd related topics. BIBLE 301 EARLY CHRISTIAN HISTORY- ACTS The book of Acts with special emphasis on the missionary philosophy and activity of the ea rly church and its current application. DOCTRINE 401 DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH (3) The doctrine of the Church, its origin, ordinances, and organization, with careful consideration given to denominational distinctives and the theological issues which underlie its mission. HISTORY 327 HISTORY OF THE EXPANS ION OF CHRISTIANITY (3) The background, origin, development, an d spread of the Christian religion; emphasis on the modern era. LINGUISTICS 301-GENERAL LINGUISTICS (3) Descriptive and historical study of language, linguistic analysis; language classifica­ tion, language in its cultural and soc ial settings. MISSIONS 312 JEWISH MISSIONS (2) The history of the J ews, their festivals and customs, their fundamental beliefs; effective methods of evangelization. PHILOSOPHY 314 PHILOSOPHY OF WORLD RELIGIONS (3) The philosophies and beliefs of the world's leading religions. Alternate year s, offered 1971-72. SOCIOLOGY 404, 405 SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND CHURCH GROWTH (3, 3) Sociolog·ical structures and their relationship to the principles and practices of church establishment and expans ion. 51
