RICHARD JONES, Chairman The major function of this depart­ ment is the professional preparation of students for teaching. An adequate preparation of the teacher should in­ clude a satisfactory subject matter foundation; a knowledge of the pupil; competency in the skills of teaching; the development and encouragement of critical judgment and creativity; and the development of social and personal traits, ethical standards, and Chris­ tian ideals of service. Requirements: In order to qualify for the Standard Te a chi n g Credential with a Specialization in Elementary Teaching, a major, professional studies, and in certain cases a minor or minors are required as well as an additional year of post-graduate edu­ cation. In order to qualify for the Standard Teaching Credential with a Specialization in Elementary Teach­ ing-Partial, a major and professional studies leading to a baccalaureate de­ gree must be completed. An addition­ al thirty units of course-work ( includ­ ing the minor when required) must be completed within seven years of the first employment in elementary teach­ ing under the credential. The requirements to qualify for the Standard Teaching Credential with a specialization in Secondary Teaching include a major, professional studies, a minor or minors in certain cases, and an additional year of postgraduate education.
