The objectives of this department are to increase linguistic aptitude, to provide a bas is for future graduate work, to meet the needs of the miss ion field, and to give an insight into cultural and literary values of other nations. The Department of Foreign Language offers a major in Spanish. A minor is avail able in each of the languages. Department Minor: 12 upper division units. French Students who have taken 2 years of high school French may not take French 101 for cred it. Students with 3 or 4 years of high school French should consult with department for proper placement. 101 , 102 ELEMENTARY FRENCH (4, 4) Basic pr inci ples of pronunci a tion a nd grammar, vocabulary drill, graded reading. From the beginning, classroom conversations in French. Five hours each week. 201 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH (4) Advanced grammar and conversat ion, with emphasis on reading for meaning and speed. Five hours each week. 302 CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH (3) Practical conversat ion and writing with emphasis on the idiomatic use of the language. 303, 304 SURVEY OF FRENCH LITERATURE (3, 3) French li tera ture from the ear li est times to the present. Alternate years, offered 1970-71. 401 SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DRAMA (3) The plays of Corneille, Moliere, and Racine. Alternate years, offered 1971-72. 402 NINETEENTH CENTURY NOVEL (3) The novels of Chateaubriand, Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola . Alternate years , offered 1971-72. German Students who have taken 2 years of high school German may not take German 101 for credit. Students wit h 3 or 4 years of high school German should consult with department for pr oper placement. In following the sequence of courses in German , the student must have a minimum grade of "C" to qualify for enroll ment in subsequent courses. 101 , 102 ELEMENTARY GERMAN (4, 4) An intensive cours.e developing the skills necessary for hearing and reading compre hens ion and simple written German . Five hours each week. 201 INTERMEDIATE GERMAN (4) A grammar r eview with readings in German literature. Collateral readings in the fi eld of each student 's special interest.
