EDUCATION The major function of this department is the professional preparation of students to teach in schools of California at the elementary level. An adequate preparation of the elementary school teacher should include: a satisfactory subject matter foundation; a knowledge of the pupil; competency in the skills of teaching; the development and encouragement of critical judgment and creativity; and the development of social and personal traits, ethical standards and Christian ideals of service. Change in Requirements: The State Legislature has made changes in the California certification requirements. These changes affect students who have not completed 60 units of college work by July 1, 1963 or who will not have graduated by September, 1966. Further information may be secured from the Education Department. Majors Required of Elementary Education Students: Each candidate must complete a major in one of the following areas: Biological Science, English, History, Humanities, Language Arts , Music, Psychology, Social Science q_r Hisp~ie A erican Studies. (Refer to the proper Division for details.) Professional Courses required of all candidates for a General Elementary Credential are: 301, 303, 305, 306, 307, 309, 312, 314, 403, 404, and Psychology 301. Students working toward credentials must meet standards of physical fitness and professional aptitude. Information about these requirements may be secured from the Education Department. All students majoring within the division must complete 6 units of inter­ mediate or advanced Foreign language. 301. PRINCIPLES AND CURRICULUM OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION. (2) Historical and sociological foundations of education . Consideration of accepted principles of teaching and trends in curricular organization in the modern rural and urban elementary school. 302. PRINCIPLES AND CURRICULUM OF SECONDARY EDUCATION. (2) The development, scope, and function of Public Education as it relates to the secondary school. Consideration of rural and urban schools, curriculum, vocational education and special education programs. Attention will be given to the teacher as a professional person. 40
