PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS Objective. The objectives of the Physical Edµcation program are: 1, to teach sports skills; 2, to teach the necessity for, and the techniques of, physical fitness; 3, to provide wholesome recreational activities and intramural sports; 4, to conduct intercollegiate athletics; and, 5, to provide a minor in physical education to aid in the planning and conducting of physical and recreational programs in schools, camps, and churches. NOTE: Physical Education Activity courses (four units) required for general education requirements should be selected with approval of minor advisor. Additional activity courses may be required in areas of individual weak ness. Elementary school teaching certification. Students studying for the elemen tary teaching certificate, but not selecting physical education as a minor area of concentration should select the following activity courses: 201, 202, and any two general physical education team sports. Physical Education Minor. This minor consists of 18 hours. 12 hours of the 18 must be upper division. The Physical Education Minor is designed for those students particularly interested in a secondary area of teaching compe tence; and for those students interested in employing organized sports and games in camp and church programs. The following courses are required for the Physical Education Minor: 200, 210, 302, 305, 308, 311, and 400; and an'y two of (21L 212, 213, and 214) . Women will take P.E. 215, and 216 instead of 211 , 212, 213, and 214. 101. TRAINING AND CONDITIONING {men). (1) Instruction in posture, balance and physical conditioning, with empha sis on development of muscular strength and endurance. Required of all new men failing to reach a prescribed minimum of physical fitness during the fall testing program. 102. BALANCE AND POSTURE (women). (1) Instruction in basic movement and balance, with emphasis in improving posture and physical fitness. Required of all new women failing to meet prescribed standards of a fall screening test. 103. ARCHERY. (1) Development of skill in archery, with practice in both field and target shooting. ~ BADMINTON. (1) The etiquette, rules, background, and techniques; development of skill in playing badminton. 105. BASKETBALL. (1) Development and knowledge of skills, team play, strategy and rules. Basic officiating principles included. 106. BODY BUILDING (men). (1) Principles and practice of weight lifting in the improvement of physical development. A study of the muscles used in lifting. 44
