DIVISION OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS Professor: Davidheiser (chairman) Assistant Professors: Cole, Graham, Reno Instructors: Bruce, Crawford, Purcell BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE Objectives . This department has a two-fold objective: (1) to give the stu­ dent the broad view of science, its methodology and discoveries necessary for intelligent living in a technological age; and (2) to provide the instruction in specific fields needed for further work in science, psychology, and education. Premajor Requirements: Science 103, 201 , 202, 203, Mathematics., i j I Department Major: 24 upper division units . Department Minor: 18 units, 12 upper division. 201 , 202. ZOOLOGY. (4, 4 three hours lecture and three hours laboratory) A survey course acquainting the student with the variety of living things and introducing the basic principles by which they exist. The signifi­ cance of these principles to man emphasized. 203 . GENERAL BOTANY. (4, three hours lecture, three hours laboratory) A study of the life histories, structure, and physiology of plants. 301, 302. PHYSIOLOGY AND ANATOMY. (4, 4, three hours lecture, three hours laboratory ) An introductory course designed to acquaint the student with the basic facts of the structure and function of the human body, with particular emphasis on the functions. 303. THE VASCULAR PLANTS. (4, three hours lecture, three hours labora- tory) · Structure, physiology, and classification of the vascular plants, with field work. 304. ECOLOGY. (3) Relationships of living things to each other and to their environments. 401. THE ORIGIN OF THE ORGANIC WORLD. (2) A course designed to familiarize the student with current and past think­ ing on the origin of the organic world. Introduction to the recent dis­ coveries and the current thought in this field leading to an intelligent evaluation of the available evidence. Prerequisite: Science 201 and 202 or their equivalent. 402. GENERAL NEUROLOGY.(3) An introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. Prerequisites: Science 201-202 and Psychology 205-206. 404. GENETICS. (4, three hours lecture and three hours laboratory) Introduction to the laws of heredity. A consideration of the operation of these laws in plants, animals, and man. Prerequisite : 201 and 202 or their equivalent. MATHEMATICS Objective. The purpose of this department is to provide a background in mathematics which is needed for further work in education, psychology, and science. 65
