Why is this time different than past cycles? Welcome and thanks for attending our sale either in person or via DV Auction. After 25 years we never grow tired of seeing our friends that are long standing customers and meeting new customers. We will share a few thoughts below about the cattle market, the beef industry and how Red Angus can contribute. So, what makes this cattle cycle different? What makes any business cycle different? Regardless of what your line of business is we have all seen a variety of cycles. And sometimes they are different than historical trends that repeat. We all remember the days when artificial intelligence (AI) was some guy that thought he knew it all but in reality, he barely knew the difference between “come here, and sic em”? These days, artificial intelligence means something very different. Many, if not most of us, thought we had seen it all in the cattle business. We were like the guy that had been to a goat roping, hog killing and 3 county fairs – we had seen it all. Well, apparently not. This cycle has been influenced by increasing age of producers, never ending drought, politics, declining herd size, the desire to cash out while the getting is good and a host of other reasons. A historic shrinking herd size clashed with rising consumer demand. Demand accelerated due to the ever-increasing quality of US grown beef. One unique aspect of having fewer cows, low heifer retention for replacements and Mexican cattle unavailable due to the screw worm infestation we had rising carcass weights, on a consistent basis, year after year after year. Those rising carcass weights are partially offsetting the loss of cattle for beef production. Those increasing weights are found in growth genetics. Growth EPDs are more important now than ever before. With all of the above stated, consumer demand, due to the consistent quality of beef is driving cattle values. Whether it is seedstock, calves going through the sale barn, retained ownership or a carcass hanging on the rail, consumer demand is driving the value (pricing) of cattle. Only a handful of breeds have the great - est impact on the quality of beef. The bulls and females from those breeds are our silver bullet. And Red Angus are one of those breeds! Red Angus bulls produce increased carcass size via heterosis with commercial females of all types and breeds and at the same time vastly improve carcass quality which in turn boosts consumer demand. Feedlot operators have made it abundantly clear for several years now that growth genetics resulting in increased average daily gain, is the most important trait they desperately need. They know the breeds that provide quality carcass traits and Red Angus is most certainly one of those breeds. In this sale we are going to emphasize growth genetics and carcass traits that are reflected in the EPDs of these cattle. Thank you so much for attending our sale. Good luck on your bidding and thank you for attending in person God bless,
The Red Alliance Team
