S eptember 8. “I f thou hadst been here, my brother had not died "¡f-Jno. 11:21. BUT wbuld he not have died? Was his death due to the personal absence of Jesus Christ? Surely Christ was there, not in His bodily presence, but in His more effectual spiritual power. Yet Lazarus died. Let u s.learn, once for all, that the presence of Christ will not save us from trial ; that trouble is ho evidence of His absence. He is never'far from HiiS loved -ones, though they see Him hot;' yet that does not exempt them from the experience of sadness and of pain. Nòr is His visible presence needed for the. purposes of blessing. • “Sir, come down, ere my child die,” was the prayer of thè'agonized father, but Christ did not go’; He:sent the suppliant away with a promise and an assur ance o f blessing. We pine for sight; H e'ask s-fòt faith, and faith is a plant that grows only in the darkness of the unseen. God’s answers to prayer (did we but realize' it) exceed the méasure of our petitions. Martha and 'Mary asked that Lazarus might not die; the requést was not granted, but a greatér joy awaited them ; they were forever assured of the certainty of the resurrection from the dead. There was vouchsafed to them a wider revelation of the Divine power in the raising of their brother from the tomb than they would have gained by his immediate restoration to health. -When God does not seem to answer our prayers, we may be sure that He has “some better thing” in store for us. There are lessbns to be learned in those waiting hours of suffering and disappointment; lessons for which we shall thank Him through all eternity. • afe S eptember 9. “There arisetha little cloud,” —1 Kings. 18 :44. THERE are clouds and clouds; clouds of danger that bring tempest, and storm; clouds of blessing that bring refreshment and peace. Of the former let us beware, though they be no big ger than the hand of a man. Take, for instance, the cloud of. estrangement between friend and friend. Only a trifling cool ness at first, so trifling as to be almost indistinguishable. But by and by it grows, until at length it interposes like an Egyptian darkness between them, and two hearts that beat as One are for ever separated. Is there such a cloud arising between us and God? A little veiling of His face; hardly noticeable, not worth worrying about—so we think. Let us see to, it that it is at once dispersed; let us discover the cause (which is in ourselves, not in Him,) that it may be removed ere the cloud “blacken heaven with storm” and we ate in the outer darkness of a separation which is worse than death. But there are clouds of blessing; harbingers of fertility, of invigoration, of beauty, of joy. Little clouds of grace in the soul, or; in the church; no bigger than an outstretched palm—we despise them because they are so small; they are not worth mentioning, much less rejoicing over. Nay, let us render thanks for them to the Giver; let us watch and waif and pray; they will grow, until, by and by, It is always a mistake to despise the day of small things, whether for good or for evil. Satan’s clouds, if neglected, never fail to grow; God’s, if cherished, always mature and dissolve in floods of enrichment on our heads. ‘ we.,' • M S eptember 10. “The truth shall make you free.” —Jno. 8 :32. WHAT is this great emancipating truth, the knowledge of which is to make us free? Surely none other than the fact of “There shall be showers of blessing,” “There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Saviour above.”
