God’s love for men in Christ. It is this which delivers us from the bondage of fear. “There is no fear in love.” We may live in perpetual terror, of a God of justice and of power, but who can fear (save in the filial sensé) a Father who so loved us as to give His only Son for our redemption and our peace? This truth will also deliver us from the bondage of sin : “Knowledge, alas 1-’tis all in vain, And all in vain our fear; Our stubborn sins will fight and reign If love be absent there;” but when once we realize the tenderness and the depth of the Divine, affection, we shall shrink with loathing from that which is offensive in His eyes, and shall cry out, “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” not because we dread His wrath, but because we desire to be pleasing in His sight. Moreover it will emancipate us from all dread as to the future. We shall ask concerning Him Who gave us His Son: “Shall he not with him freely give us all things?” We shall be sure that such love can never abandon us to despair. The Devil, who holds us in servitude, dreads nothing so much as that we should know and believe this truth. . m S eptember 11. “The earth shined with his glory.’W^Ezek. 43:2. AND it does so still. “Two words are ours; ’tis only sin Forbids us to descry The mystic earth and heavens within, Plain as the sea and sky.” God’s power, manifesting itself in beauty and in goodness, is manifest in all nature, had we but eyes to see and ears to hear. The earth sheweth His handiwork and the heavens declare His -glory as in the days of the sweet singer of old. ’Tis whispered by the zephyr amid the trees of the forest, “ ’Tis thundered from the solemn hills, ■And answered by the exulting sea;” it blazes from the summer sun; it crashes in the roar of thé tempest, / “And gently distils in the dew and the rain;” . the stars sing of it in their courses ; the very birds warble it in the leafy glade. That man is blind indeed who in the midst of such a universe can say: “There is no God,” nor is he less foolish who can gaze upon the operations of the Divine hand and doubt the wisdom and the lové of the Creator. Did wé study the works of God with a more earnest and reverent atten tion, we should learn many a spiritual lesson and gain a store of comfort and of hope that would prove an inestimable boon to our weary, care-worn hearts. The Word written and the word cre ated are alike intended for our contemplation and our encour agement. Let us go forth and gaze upon the latter afresh until its message fills our souls with peace.

S eptember 12. "The joy of the Lord is your strength.” —Neh. 8:10.
JOY is the best tonic in the pharmacopoeia of life. The sad heart tires while the merry one is yet running along the track. Moreover joy, in some form or other, is the great object of all men’s search. How then is it best to be obtained? Joy is an elusive jade; she hides from those who seek her, while she comes to others all unsought. But there is one sure way of
