May be repeated for a maximum of 3 units. May be repeated fo r a to tal of 6 units. 470 DIRECTED RESEARCH (1-3) Individual research in an area of communicat ions determined in consultation with the instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of three units. Prerequisite: consent. INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES The Interdisciplinary Major in Commun ication Studies seeks to provide the student with a com­ prehensive know ledge of the process , nature, and effects of human communi cation. The major may se lect an emphasis in e ither Mass Communi cati on or Interpersonal Communi cation wh ich cons ists of 30 units beyond general ed ucat ion (24 of the units must be upper division.) The spec iali zat ion in Mass Communication centers upon the dynamics of communi cation designed to influence human conduc t in macrocosmic soc ia l contexts. The specia li zation in Interpersona l Communi cation centers upon small group , face to face communicative interaction ranging from dyadic to intercultural leve ls. Each student must take a 3 unit performance course in oral commun ication and a 3 unit performance course in written communi cation.
